How Do I Choose the Best Toothpaste for Braces?

If you are wearing braces, good oral hygiene is essential to protecting your teeth and smile. When choosing the best toothpaste for braces, it is a good idea to talk to your orthodontist or dentist. This is because individuals who wear braces have special considerations and need to ensure that their teeth are protected while receiving orthodontic treatment. Some orthodontists, for example, may advise against the use of whitening toothpaste. If you find that you are developing significant discomfort during your treatment, your orthodontist may also recommend the use of a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. Many dental professionals advise patients to use a toothpaste that contains fluoride.

A significant concern for many orthodontists and dentists is the possibility that food particles and bacteria can get trapped in orthodontic appliances. Over time, this can cause significant damage to tooth enamel. As a result, many orthodontists encourage patients to follow a strict oral hygiene regimen that includes the use of several products. Your orthodontist may provide you with an oral hygiene kit at the beginning of your treatment that includes his or her recommended toothpaste for braces. If you don't receive this from your orthodontist, ask him or her for a list of appropriate types of toothpaste.

Many people who have braces find that they experience tooth sensitivity and discomfort. In such cases, you may wish to consider a toothpaste for braces that contains ingredients that can dull the sensitivity. Before selecting one of these products, you may wish to speak to your orthodontist or dental hygienist to find out if it is appropriate for you.

It is also important to read the labels of any toothpaste or oral hygiene product that you purchase, as they may contain tooth-whitening ingredients. The trouble with using these products during orthodontic treatment is that they may change the color of your teeth everywhere but those areas where the braces are attached to your teeth. This can result in an unflattering difference in coloration on your teeth that may need to be treated professionally.

In addition to using a good toothpaste for braces, it is important that you work with your orthodontist to develop a daily oral hygiene routine. Your orthodontist can help you select a toothbrush that can safely and effectively clean your teeth and braces. You may also need to use a special brush that can fit between your teeth along with a dental floss threader. For additional cleaning and freshening, your orthodontist or dentist may also be able to recommend a mouth rinse or mouthwash that contains ingredients that can protect your teeth against damage and decay.

@anamur-- Ask your dentist for a starter kit. I really liked the fluoride toothpaste that was in my starter kit. It was very good, I used all of it.

@anamur-- I use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. My braces hurt a lot and they have made my teeth sensitive too. I also have pain when I'm eating something very hot or cold now. The sensitive teeth toothpaste helps with that. If you have pain, which I'm sure you do a little bit, then use this kind of toothpaste.

If you don't have much pain or sensitivity, then you can basically use anything. Just avoid whitening toothpastes or mouthwashes, because like the article said they will cause staining. Some regular mouthwashes cause staining too, so watch out for that.

I got braces a few weeks ago but my dentist didn't mention anything about toothpaste. I also didn't ask because I didn't know that I might need a different type of toothpaste because of the braces. I've been using my regular fluoride toothpaste.

Does anyone else here have braces? What kind of toothpaste are you using? Do you have any recommendations for me?
