What Are the Benefits of Honey Lip Balm?

The benefits of using honey lip balm are numerous. Honey has been known to moisturize and disinfect lips and help in the healing of chapped lips and lip-related wounds. Lip balm made with honey can be purchased at stores or can be made at home.

Honey has the ability to help lips retain moisture. It acts as a moisture barrier, protecting the lips from exterior factors that would strip the skin of their natural moisture. In this way, honey is a natural safeguard against dry and cracked lips.

In addition to keeping lips moisturized, honey also can provide protection against infectious agents. Honey has natural antibacterial properties in it that make it helpful in the treating of wounds. For this reason, injuries or wounds on the lips might benefit from the application of honey.

Honey lip balms commonly have other ingredients added to them. Mint, almond oil and shea butter are a few of the ingredients that one can find in honey lip balms. Usually, extra ingredients are added to a honey lip balm to enhance the efficacy of the balm. Almond oil, for example, can help keep moisture within the lips, too.

People who are interested in using honey lip balm but do not wish to buy it can try making honey lip balm at home. The recipes are relatively simple and can be completed with the use of a combination of common ingredients such as honey, almond oil, beeswax, grapeseed oil, coconut oil and shea butter. One way that makers of honey lip balm can reduce their risk of allergic reaction is to look for honey that has been made in the area in which they live.

Potential users of honey lip balm can even consider applying pure honey to their lips as an alternative to other lip balms. To do this, they need only apply a thin layer of honey to their chapped lips and allow the honey to heal the lips. A benefit of this type of application is that the honey can disinfect the lips and heal wounds directly.

Choosing lip balms that are made out of natural ingredients can benefit their users by providing them with healthy moisturizing alternatives. Many lip balm products on the market have come under scrutiny for including ingredients that could be potentially hazardous. Some studies have even linked certain ingredients with carcinogenic factors. By using natural lip balm, users might be able to reduce their risk of medical problems.

@amsden2000 - I love cherry! It's my favorite flavor, but I have to agree about the cough syrup -- gross! I'm reading all the other recipes posted here, so I thought I'd share mine. I made my own recipe and I put it in small tins for my purse.

I use a tablespoon of beeswax, 2 teaspoons of honey, 2 drops of cherry flavoring or a teaspoon of cherry juice and a teaspoon of mango butter. Just heat it slowly on the stove top and then pour it into the tins to cool.

The cherry juice adds a pretty tint to my lips without having to add a chuck of lipstick -- which I did originally, but it seemed weird. Hope you enjoy!

@Almita - I use a recipe I found online. 2 teaspoons of coconut oil, 1/2 teaspoon of lanolin, 1 1/2 teaspoons of honey and 2 drops of peppermint extract. It makes a lip balm that's sort of like Burt's Bees and it's great for chapped lips.

I love honey and I think I eat it too much. It's really great for you and doesn't taste as awful as a lot of cough syrups. That horrible artificial cherry flavor gets to me – I don't even like it in lip balms. The peppermint and honey mix is way better, in my opinion, than cherry will ever be.

@Almita - I make my own beeswax and honey lip balm. I use a tablespoon of coconut oil, a tablespoon of shredded beeswax and a tablespoon of honey. I usually add a drop or two of lemon extract for flavor -- it makes it really tasty. Lemon and honey are a match made in heaven.

If you save your lip balm containers, you can put the stuff you make in them. It saves you a lot of hassle trying to find the right lip balm tin. Most of the ones your can buy are too big, so I just wash out my old ones.

Honey has always been an important part of my household. My parents believed that it helped fight sore throats when you gargle it, so they always kept a container of clover honey. It always worked for me. My mom loved Burt's Bees brand of moisturizers and lotions, since they use honey in almost everything.

I prefer Nuxe honey lip balm -- it's what I've been using for years. I've also tried making my own lip balm out of honey, essential oils and coconut oil -- it comes out pretty good, but I still need to perfect the recipe. Does anyone else make their own honey lip balm?
