How Do I Choose the Best Natural Sponge?

A natural sponge can used as a tool for applying makeup or bathing. It also has commercial uses for cleaning windows or cars g. Made from the skeleton of a simple sea animal, the sponge is a sustainable product. The size and purpose of sponge you need will determine your choice. If you don’t like using a natural sponge for any reason, synthetic ones are available, usually made of polyurethane or cellulose.

These sponges contain spongin, a protein substance similar to hair that makes the natural sponge soft enough to use. Most other species are too crusty and don’t absorb moisture. They are primarily cultivated for use in the cosmetic and cleaning industries. When a sponge is harvested, it is covered with a dark brown membrane through which it feeds. This is removed and the sponge is then cleaned and washed with peroxide, resulting in the light brown to yellowish color people know best.

Before you choose a natural sponge, think about what you are going to use it for. A bath sponge should usually be between 4 to 7 inches (11 to 18 cm) in length, depending on how large your hand is. The best type of sponge for this use is a wool or grass sponge, due to its softness and longevity. A make up applicator sponge is usually made of the softest types, and is much smaller than a bath sponge.

With their large pores and rough texture, natural sponges tend to be better than synthetic ones at exfoliating skin.

Many people use a natural sponge to wash the car. A larger wool sponge is usually better for this. Check to see if the sponge contains any sand or shell bits that could scratch the car’s finish. A thorough wash should take care of any leftover bits stuck inside.

The natural sponge can be slightly abrasive, so it’s best not to use one if you have easily irritated skin or a condition such as eczema or psoriasis that is aggravated by harsh scrubbing. Vigorous washing of acne-prone, oily skin can cause inflammation and breakouts. A very soft sponge or washcloth is better used on this type of skin, paired with a gentle cleanser.

If you don't like the natural sponge, you can use a synthetic one. There are different types, some made to look like sea sponges. Polyester cosmetic sponges are readily available and work well as makeup applicators. They should be washed often with soap and water and replaced when they crumble. The typical yellow kitchen sponge, fine for washing dishes and cleaning, is made mostly of cellulose from wood pulp.

Fishermen use a hook to slice sponges at least five inches (12.7 cm) from the base, leaving enough for regeneration. Sometimes divers cut them off with knives in the same fashion. This sustainable practice helps ensure a continuing supply. The regenerative abilities of a sponge guarantee that, harvested responsibly, they should remain commercially available.

I love applying makeup with small, natural sponges. If you can find the right kind that isn't too large or harsh, you will get a durable sponge that gives you a beautiful finish to the makeup you apply.

I have found that most natural sponges are too harsh for the sensitive skin on my face. The problem for has always been that I really prefer using natural products whenever I possibly can. That is why I searched and found a great alternative to natural sponges for cleaning my face.

Several natural products companies make wash clothes that are made of organic, natural materials. Not only are these wash clothes safe and environmentally-sound, but they are extremely soft. This makes them great to use on sensitive skin.

Another benefit of using wash clothes made of natural fibers instead of natural sponges is that they last much longer. While natural sponges eventually get worn out and fall apart, natural wash clothes last every bit as long as regular wash clothes.
