What Is Automatic Eyeliner?

Automatic eyeliner is an eye pencil that does not require sharpening. The design of automatic eyeliner is patterned from that of an automatic pencil, in which the lead is encased in a plastic tube and a user can simply push or twist a mechanism on the pencil to force its lead into the pencil's tip. Similarly, automatic eyeliner emerges from its casing after a user twists the body of the pencil. This eliminates the need for a separate pencil sharpener as well as having to dispose of messy shavings. Many people prefer this form of eyeliner for its convenience and because pencil eyeliners are often very easy to use.

Eyeliner is a type of eye makeup that people can use to enhance their eyes. The eyeliner can draw attention to the eyes and even make eyelashes appear thicker. There are several different types of eyeliner, including liquid eyeliner, powder eyeliner, and eyeliner pencils. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and some people may use more than one type of eyeliner depending on the look they want to achieve. Pencil eyeliners have the advantage of being self-contained, so there is no need to use a separate eyeliner brush. In addition, many people feel more comfortable using a pencil to line their eyes than they do a brush. This can allow makeup users to achieve more consistent results in their makeup applications.

One difficulty with standard types of pencil eyeliner is that it needs frequent resharpening, as its tip becomes dull with use. Sharpening typically requires the use of a separate sharpener, although some manufacturers of eye pencils may include a sharpener in the pencil's cap. If the user of the eye pencil can't find a sharpener, he or she may not be able to use the eyeliner until a sharpener can be found or purchased. Automatic eyeliner solves this problem by forcing the lead through the pencil's body mechanically. As the eyeliner wears away, the user can simply twist more into its place.

Some types of automatic eyeliner are designed to be disposable. Once the eyeliner runs out, the user disposes of the casing and buys a new pencil. Some cosmetic companies, however, have created automatic eyeliner casings that can be refilled. The advantage to this type of eyeliner is that users can refill one pencil casing with whichever eyeliner they wish to wear on a particular day. Waste is also reduced, as the casing is reused, and in some cases using refillable eyeliner can be less expensive over time, as only the eyeliner lead needs to be replaced on a regular basis.
